Experience the ultimate Madonie Mountain safari

There’s a wilder side of Sicily that most travelers miss—a land of rugged dirt trails, high-altitude breezes, and wide-open horizons. This is the Madonie Regional Park. The best way to explore it? With a safari on our trusty Land Rover. Starting from Cefalù or Caltavuturo, we’ll leave the paved roads and coastal crowds behind to forge our own path into the heart of the backcountry. As we climb ancient shepherd tracks, the landscape shifts around every bend—from rolling pastures to dramatic rocky peaks, dotted with centuries-old stone ruins.

Along the way, we’ll pull over at breathtaking lookouts with views stretching all the way to the coast. You’ll hear the stories that shaped these mountains, spot local wildlife, and discover the fascinating history of a region that sat at the bottom of the ocean millions of years ago.

What to expect

At our favorite scenic spots, we’ll cut the engine and slow things down. We’ll kick back in the shade for an authentic Madonie picnic featuring hand-crafted local cheeses, fresh bread, and regional specialties. Whether you’re a family with kids eager for an off-road quest, a couple chasing unbeatable views, or a photographer looking for the perfect shot, this tour is built for you. Nature lovers are in for a treat, too—these mountains are a global hotspot for rare plant species found nowhere else on the planet.

What to bring

Mountain weather has a mind of its own, and even mid-summer breezes can get chilly at high altitudes. The trick is dressing in layers: wear a comfy t-shirt, but keep a light jacket or fleece handy in your backpack. To move around comfortably during our stops, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes (hiking shoes or good sneakers). Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and, of course, your camera—you’re going to want to capture every moment.
