The Enchanting Tiberius Gorges
If you’re spending your holiday in Cefalù and have access to a car—either your own or a rental—it’s absolutely worth taking a detour to visit the Tiberius Gorges (Gole di Tiberio): a stunning natural canyon located within the Madonie Regional Park, about 35 km from the town. Alternatively, you can reach the gorges even without your own vehicle thanks to a convenient transfer service departing from Cefalù train station, with return trip included.
This spectacular corner of Sicily, officially recognised as a UNESCO Geopark, stretches between the territories of San Mauro Castelverde and Castelbuono. The Tiberius Gorges are perfect for anyone looking to spend a day outdoors, surrounded by an authentic and unspoilt landscape. But this is not just a place to admire—it’s also an ideal destination for adventure lovers. Since 2012, the association Madonie Outdoor ASD has been offering outdoor sports activities along the Pollina River, including inflatable boat excursions, river trekking and, for the more daring, rafting.
The route offers breathtaking views and truly unique details: from fossil-rich rock walls to the area known as “U miricu”, the narrowest and most fascinating section of the gorge, and the famous “brigands’ boulder”. Along the way, you may also spot bird nests, enjoy surprising panoramas and admire the incredible play of light that makes the experience even more scenic.
Not far from the entrance, visitors will find the equipped area “La Rocca”, offering a range of useful services such as toilets, changing rooms, showers, a bar, barbecue stations, picnic tables and even a children’s playground.
Inside the area, there are also several sports facilities and a nature trail illustrating the flora and fauna of the Madonie Park, accessible in Braille as well. The association’s guides speak several languages, including English, French, Spanish and German, making the excursions suitable for international visitors too.
The most authentic Sicily is out there, ready to surprise you.
